So a few of my friends have expressed interesting in the recent Xbox game Advent Rising. I gave it a try, and here are my thoughts from the first 20 minutes:
The aliasing is horrible, probably the worst I've ever seen in an Xbox game.
The music is really good; this is probably the best part (and maybe the only good part) of the game.
Frame rates stutter a lot, even when there's not much going on.
Animations are a bit stiff. The character's footsteps when walking sound like he has a limp. The character's proportions are weird. His legs are too long and his torso is too short and he looks like he's wearing bell bottoms.
The soft shadowing is nice, although I'd gladly give it up for better frame rates.
The water texturing is wrong; an ankle-deep pool should not be as blue as the bluest ocean.
The newscasts and things that you pass by are nice initially. Then you realize that each on is only about 15 seconds long before it repeats.
More interactivity with the NPCs would be great (that is, more than nothing). They talk among themselves, but don't respond to you at all. The only interactivity is in cutscenes.
The dialogue ranges from decent to awkward. The tone sometimes seems a bit wrong.
The hand to hand fighting system is awkward and overly simple. Punching the enemies doesn't stun them at all, but you reel back at every punch you take. The ranged weapon system isn't too good either. Technically it's ok, but it just isn't that much fun given the auto-targetting.
You can't jump over a stairway railing to the ground, despite the ground being a walkable area and your jump height being far above the railing. Not a major issue, but when you can jump as high as this guy can, it's weird to not be able to jump over things.
The 3D Sound calculations are neat, but the sound falls off so fast that you have to stand almost on top of someone to hear what's being said.
It crashed in the training section. That was enough for me.
This is a game that could have been good, but it needed another year or two of development. I was looking forward to it given that Orson Scott Card supposedly had something to do with the story, but I'm not sure if I can get past all the game's flaws to actually play it. Gamespot gave this game a 5.7 and I can see why.

Er..
Yeah...the music was good at VGL. The story looked decent. Let's hope the next two don't suck.July 20 2005, 22:06:42 UTC 6 years ago
